Lower Township

Lower Township's Historic Cold Spring Village, a collection of authentic buildings from around Cape May County, has preserved the essence of everyday life in southern New Jersey much as it was in the 1800s. A living history, outdoor museum on 22 acres, the village is named for a once-popular spring of cold water on Route 9 that refreshed weary travelers passing through the area during the early days of the county. Train service from the Village to the County Zoo adds even more interest to a day at the Village and free concerts are held every Saturday evening through the summer.

Across from the Village on the Seashore Road side, tours of Cold Spring Presbyterian Church and its nearby historic cemetery are conducted throughout the summer. A log cabin was built on the site in 1718 and the present church, called "Old Brick," dates back to 1823 and is a National Historic Landmark Site. The cemetery is the final resting place for many Mayflower descendants, seafaring men, children who died in epidemics and heroes from every war.

The Cape May Canal, built during World War II to link the Delaware Bay with the Atlantic Ocean, provides boating enthusiasts with a convenient and scenic route to Cape May Harbor and access to the Intracoastal Waterway.

The Cape May-Lewes Ferry crosses Delaware Bay from its terminal in Lower Township to Lewes, Delaware with a fleet of modern ferries that provide transportation for motorists, cyclists and passengers traveling to and from the Cape May area. Billed as the Best Boat Ride in America, regularly-scheduled daily crossings are the perfect way to enjoy a scenic bay cruise.

Great camping facilities, golf courses, bird watching opportunities and Sunset Beach with its sunken concrete ship and Cape May diamonds combine with Lower Township’s natural assets to welcome visitors to the bayside of the Cape May County peninsula for vacation fun and enjoyment.
